However, the Amazon remains under continuous threat. Illegal deforestation and mining, exploitation, and degradation of indigenous peoples and riverside communities, and smuggling of biodiversity.

The efforts of numerous individuals and organizations that now defend this territory and its people signal that the standing forest is worth much more than being cut down or burned, and that the people who inhabit the forest deserve to live with their values, culture, and subsistence preserved.
